There is a natural symbiosis between humans and plants that we overlook at the expense of our mental and physical well-being. Many of us in the Western world spend a staggering 90 to 95% of our time indoors, with, if we are lucky, just a distant view of greenery. The more urban our surroundings, the more important it is to incorporate plants into our homes and offices. Plants create an attractive, individual environment and bring colour and energy into the room; they boost oxygen levels, remove pollutants and reduce air temperatures, as well as raising humidity, making it literally easier for us to breathe.
Of course, to work effectively for our well-being, plants must be healthy and kept that way. They need good lighting and regular care, including feeding and watering. And it must be borne in mind that, although cases of poisoning in adults are extremely rare, all cut flowers and houseplants are for ornamental use only. Unless they are sold specifically as food, they should not be eaten! |
